Australia urged to act on deep sea mining after moratorium fails

Our Research Coordinator, Dr Helen Rosenbaum, discusses with Fran Kelly from Australia’s ABC’s The Radio National Hour, about the mounting global opposition to deep sea mining (DSM), including from scientists, Pacific communities, civil society and thirty-eight countries who have called for either a ban, moratorium or a “precautionary pause”.

Helen also talks about the lack of science about our deep ocean seabeds and what the long lasting impacts will be if DSM goes ahead.

With the recent International Seabed Authority (ISA) decision to launch an official investigation into deep sea mining contractors, it is yet to be seen whether President Trump’s executive order will allow the exploitation of international waters, including vast areas of the Pacific Ocean.
